Culture and Ecology Lab

We study how patterns of cultural variation may be understood as responses to changes in basic ecological features, using various methods including surveys, archival data, and experiments. Here are some questions we've been asking: Why do different cultures (and individuals) have different norms, rules, expectations for appropriate behavior? For example, why is it appropriate to ask someone their age in some cultures but not in others? What kinds of information do we want to find out about others when we first meet them, and why?
