The NAMI HelpLine is a free, nationwide peer-support service providing information, resource referrals and support to people living with a mental health condition, their family members and caregivers, mental health providers and the public. We strongly emphasize that our HelpLine Specialists have "lived," personal experience - either as a person living with a mental health condition or as someone caring for a loved one living with a mental health condition.

WHAT DO NAMI HELPLINE INTERN SPECIALISTS DO?
NAMI HelpLine interns work remotely to respond to inquiries by phone, SMS/chat, and social media posts and provide valuable information about mental health conditions and treatment options, NAMI education and support programs, and other mental health resources. NAMI HelpLine interns also help individuals and families improve their lives and advance mental health recovery by listening to their concerns and providing brief emotional support. An internship with NAMI HelpLine is an opportunity to develop a deep understanding of the mental health landscape, mental illnesses, treatment options and recovery strategies.

WHAT DOES THE TRAINING LOOK LIKE?

The NAMI HelpLine internship requires a commitment to completing 20 hours of training within a three-week onboarding period designed to prepare you to confidently and positively address the diverse needs presented by help seekers. Throughout your onboarding experience, you will complete rewarding online instructional content, interactive exercises, knowledge checks and a final test prior to joining as a member of the

NAMI HelpLine Specialist Team.

WHAT DOES A NAMI HELPLINE INTERNSHIP OFFER?

The NAMI HelpLine internship opportunity can be sought out for academic credit, depending on your school’s guidelines and program requirements. Interns have the ability to attend NAMI HelpLine Q&A Sessions to learn more about a variety of important mental health topics and engage in impactful discussions. NAMI HelpLine interns can also participate in “special projects,” whether that be a task that our HelpLine Staff members need help in completing or a creative project that the intern comes up with themselves (e.g., creating a new job aid for the HelpLine). An additional benefit of interning with the NAMI HelpLine is the opportunity to get certified as a NAMI HelpLine Specialist.

TESTIMONIAL FROM MONICA, MARYMOUNT UNIVERSITY, MAJOR: PSYCHOLOGY

“NAMI is very professional in practicing the hiring, training, and supportive procedures. The team is very knowledgeable and makes interns feel welcomed and comfortable working with them. I think the help and guidance NAMI offers to others is excellent, and I would not make changes in the way how they interact with interns. They know how to connect and communicate with people.”

TESTIMONIAL FROM KAMRYN, GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY, MAJOR: HUMAN DEVELOPMENT & FAMILY SCIENCE

“I really enjoyed being part of such a great team and I love the work that NAMI does. I have learned so much about NAMI and mental health during this internship experience that I will always carry with me. It has been more than I could have hoped for, and I appreciate everyone!”
