Internship Description

 

Join the world of Educational Psychology at GUHSD to learn more about child development, abnormal psychology, behavioral principals, and cognitive psychology in a school setting! Work with a School Psychologist and the Special Services department to get experience collaborating as a team to support individuals with disabilities. 

 

Observations

  • Observe a Psychological testing session with School Psychologist (e.g., intelligence, achievement, Autism, memory)

  • Observation during unstructured time (lunch, activities, clubs)

  • Observe an academic intervention session (reading or math)

  • Observe in each grade level in high school

  • Observe English Learner classrooms

  • Observe different Special Education environments (Learning Strategies, Self-Contained Intellectual Disabilities or Autism Spectrum Disorders, Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, etc.)

  • Observe a vocational training program

  • Observe an elective class (art, theatre, culinary, P.E., etc.)

  • Observe a counseling session

 

Activities

  • Attend Student Intervention Team meeting

  • Enter data from parent input and teacher input into evaluation review

  • Help in a self-contained Special Education classroom

  • Help with self-contained program at lunch

  • Buddy with a student who needs TLC attention

  • Collect behavior data on a student

  • Attend a staff meeting

  • Review written psychological reports to get a sense of what is incorporated

  • Attend a School Psychologist meeting

  • Attend an initial referral meeting

  • Attend a Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team meeting

  • Attend an Individualized Education Program (IEP, Special Education) meeting

  • Attend Project Aware meeting for systemic implementation of mental health services 

  • Attend a Special Education Team meeting

  • Attend Professional Learning Committee (PLC) training or professional development

  • Collect observation data for an evaluation
  • Help with self-contained students on a fieldtrip
  • Help with Unified Sports/Special Olympics
  • Teach a lesson on coping skills 

 

*Finger print clearance is required and may take 6 to 8 weeks to obtain.  IVP level clearance
