Access to evidence-based mental health care remains a growing need across communities and healthcare systems. As a student in ASU’s Department of Psychology, you’ll build research-informed clinical skills through the online Master of Science in clinical psychology program while preparing for careers in mental and behavioral health settings.

Admission requirements
To be considered for admission, you must have:
- Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States or an equivalent international institution
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 (on a 4.00 scale) in the last 60 credit hours of your first bachelor’s degree program
or - Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 (on a 4.00 scale) in an applicable master’s degree program
Applicants commonly have backgrounds in psychology, behavioral health, counseling, healthcare or related fields, though individuals seeking a career transition into mental healthcare are also encouraged to apply.
Students must have completed 12 credit hours of undergraduate or graduate course work in psychology or a behavioral health-related area. One course must be undergraduate or graduate statistics.
Applicants whose native language is not English must provide proof of English proficiency regardless of current residency.
Location and authorization requirements
Due to state licensure requirements, this program is not available to prospective students located outside of the United States. Applicants with international transcripts who reside within the United States may be considered for admission. In most cases, applicants must reside in an approved, non-restricted state to be eligible for admission and enrollment. To be considered for admission, you must submit the following supporting materials along with ASU’s graduate application and application fee:
- Official transcripts
- Personal statement
- Professional resume
- Two letters of recommendation
- A combination of academic and professional references is preferred, particularly from clinically oriented or behavioral health-related supervisors.

Program details and expectations
As part of the program, you will complete 600 hours of supervised, in-person practicum training in your local community.
During practicum experiences, you will work directly with clients under the supervision of licensed psychologists while applying evidence-based assessment and treatment approaches in clinical settings.
The practicum experience is designed to help you develop professional competencies in mental and behavioral health services while preparing for future licensure opportunities.
The curriculum for the MS in clinical psychology has been developed to align with American Psychological Association master’s-level accreditation standards and prepare graduates to pursue state licensure for master’s-level clinical practice. The program will pursue APA master’s-level accreditation in the near-future.

Expand your studies with an addiction certificate
You can pair the MS in clinical psychology with ASU’s online graduate certificate in addiction and substance-use related disorders to expand your clinical training.
The certificate provides evidence-based preparation in assessing, diagnosing and treating substance use disorders and meets educational requirements for addiction counselor licensure in Arizona and many other states.
Combined training strengthens skills in treating co-occurring conditions, supports dual-licensure pathways and prepares graduates for work in integrated care settings.
