These scholarships and awards—valued at $100 to over $2000—are available to our psychology majors. Recipients will be acknowledged at the department's annual award ceremony in April.
All applicants must be psychology majors who will be enrolled as full-time students during the following fall semester (Fall 2024). Application through the link below must be received by Friday, Feb 9 at 5pm.

The Zita M. Johnson Child Study Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a psychology major with a demonstrated commitment and career plans in the fields of: child psychology, early intervention, child care, family counseling, social services for children and families, applied child development research, or social policy. The donor, Zita M. Johnson, served for 25 years as an administrator and teacher at the Child Study Laboratory in the Department of Psychology.
Ernest Lindholm Award for Outstanding Senior in Biopsychology. This award is made to a psychology major with a research record and career interests in biopsychology.
Phil Mickelson Award for Excellence in Psychology. This award was established by Phil Mickelson—an ASU Psychology major, outstanding student-athlete, and top-ranked professional golfer—to honor former Dean Gary Krahenbuhl. The ideal recipient will demonstrate the qualities that Phil embodied as a student-athlete.
The Dariel Overby Memorial Scholarship Award. This award memorializes Dariel “Rusty” Overby’s spirit and dedication to education. Dariel majored in psychology at ASU after a successful volleyball career at Colorado State. She had a strong desire to help people and wanted to pursue a graduate degree. Her life was tragically cut short just two days before graduation. Her husband endowed this award in her memory.
Psychology Scholar Awards. Six awards—two scholarships each for rising sophomores, rising juniors, and rising seniors—are presented by the Department of Psychology in recognition of outstanding academic achievement plus engagement in research activities and/or the application of psychology in the community. These awards are supported by generous contributions to the Psychology General Fund.
John W. Reich Prize in Applied Social Psychology. This award is made to the psychology major whose research activity best exemplifies the approach to research associated with Professor Reich— the testing of theories in non-laboratory settings and the analysis of significant social problems with scientific techniques.
The Smith Marshall Scholarship. This scholarship—awarded to one or two psychology majors each year—was created to enable underrepresented students with financial need to pursue a degree in psychology. The donors are Judith M Smith, one of the first women to earn her Ph.D. in Psychology at ASU, and W. Jeff Marshall. The recipient must be a U.S. citizen with documented financial need as defined by ASU's Financial Aid and Scholarship Services who attended high school in Arizona; preference is given to applicants who attended K-12 in Arizona. Selection is based on criteria such as financial need, merit, adversity factors geography, and other factors that are neutral as to race, ethnicity, sex, color, national origin, and other protected groups.

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
Dean’s Medal Award (Medal and Recognition at Graduation). Honoring outstanding academic achievement and engagement in psychological research, Dean’s Medals will adorn 18 of the 4,000 ASU seniors graduating with degrees in natural sciences, humanities and social sciences each spring. The medal was created by Robert E. Page, Jr., former Dean of The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, to recognize the top graduating student in each of the degree-granting schools and departments in the college. From this elite group of 18, three (3) are chosen to receive the ASU Alumni Association Outstanding Graduate Awards – one for each of three areas: Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, and Humanities.
