Internship Description

Our Therapeutic Riding Program instills confidence and builds self esteem as students develop skills and strength to ride independently under the supervision of a Certified Riding Instructor or Certified Riding Instructor in Training.


A therapeutic riding internship offers hands-on experience combining horsemanship with physical, occupational, or mental health therapy. Interns typically assist with riding sessions, horse care, and client interaction. Interns will have hands-on experience with clients during their sessions with the horses. Our client population is children aged 4 through seniors 99 years of age.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Becoming familiar with sidewalking/horse leader duties
  • Assisting clients with mounting and exercises
  • Assisting instructor with clinical notes
  • Assisting with horse care and saddling/tackling

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:

  • Must be comfortable around horses
  • Must be able to walk or jog on uneven ground for extended periods
  • Must be able to walk near and alongside horses
  • Must be able to lift 25-50lbs
  • Must be able to bend, stretch, and reach past head


Qualifications:

  • Finished training for HL - Horse Leading & SW- Sidewalker; this WILL be taught the site prior to the internship starting and has a deadline of 2 weeks into the semester
  • Attended a within 1 month of starting Robinson Ranch Volunteer Orientation
  • Successfully passed a Fingerprint Clearance (Robinson Ranch can provide this service during orientation)
  • Must be comfortable working around horses and willing to learn proper handling and safety procedures
  • Should be able to follow directions, work independently or as part of a team, and handle light physical labor in varying weather conditions
  • Previous experience with horses or individuals with disabilities is not required, though it is highly valued
  • A positive attitude, commitment to animal welfare, and reliability are essential
