Where children learn through play, exploration and discovery

The Child Study Laboratory (CSL) is a university preschool in ASU’s Department of Psychology for children ages 15 months to 5 years. Experienced teachers use research-backed practices to help children build confidence, curiosity and skills for school and life. Enrollment is open to the community.

How children learn at the Child Study Lab

A play-based curriculum

Teachers build on children’s interests through child-directed play and teacher-guided learning. Everyday classroom experiences help children practice communication, problem-solving, independence, empathy and self-regulation.

Children explore:

  Child-directed play.

  Literacy and early math.

  Music and movement.

  Social-emotional learning.

  Art and sensory exploration.

  Science and discovery.

  Outdoor play and nature.

  Creative expression.

Learning what to do and why

Young children need clear guidance about what they can do, not only what they should stop doing. Instead of simply saying “No running,” a teacher might say, “We use walking feet to stay safe.”

When children disagree over a toy, teachers help them ask for a turn, decide whether to share now or in a few minutes, or choose another activity. These everyday exchanges help children express what they need, understand expectations and manage their emotions.

Why families choose the CSL

Individual attention

The CSL averages one adult for every four children. Teachers and supervised ASU students provide frequent opportunities for conversation, guidance and individual interaction.

Family involvement

Private observation rooms with one-way mirrors and audio allow parents and legal guardians to watch their child learn. Families can also participate in the classroom, and the CSL may offer events or workshops throughout the year.

Growth over time

Research-based assessments, provided at no additional cost, help families follow their child’s growth in areas such as vocabulary and social understanding.
